Our brain\u2019s ability to hold onto information in the short and long terms is key to allowing us to function in our lives. Children especially need to have well functioning memory systems in order to support proper learning and development in all areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>As a parent, you\u2019re well aware of how important memory is for your children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s common for parents to feel frustrated about children not remembering items for school, the important thing they needed to do, or information required for a test.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the days tick by, and kids spend increasing amounts of time using technology, more and more parents are beginning to wonder <\/span><b>if more screen time has any kind of effect on memory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and whether screens are connected to kids\u2019 memory loss. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What types of memory are important for kids?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several main types of memory that are required for healthy life function and relationships, including the following general categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sensory memory <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This allows us to <\/span><b>retain information about our sensory experiences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how things feel, smell, or taste. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>Short-term memory<\/b><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remembering a phone number someone just told you and holding onto the directions you just were given are two examples of short-term memory, which by definition is <\/span><b>information we hold onto for a brief period of time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (about 30 seconds).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working memory is an important part of short-term memory. This type of memory allows us to hold onto information in order to do something with it in the moment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example would be telling your child to go upstairs, get their shoes, and bring them back to you. They would need to use their working memory to hold onto those 3 directions in order to complete them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>Long-term memory<\/b><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes <\/span><b>anything our brain retains for longer than about 30 seconds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Things like remembering people\u2019s faces, remembering your home address, and recalling an event that happened years ago fall into this category. There are several different types of long-term memory specific to information like facts, life experiences, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and procedures for doing tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/static.qustodio.com\/public-site\/uploads\/2022\/09\/20094146\/Blog_IsScreenTimeAffectingYourKidMemoryLoss_InsideImage.png&#8221; alt=&#8221;Does screen time affect memory loss&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Blog_IsScreenTimeAffectingYourKidMemoryLoss_InsideImage&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; disabled_on=&#8221;off|off|off&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Screen time can contribute to memory problems for children<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child\u2019s capacity to form and retain these three main types of memories is critical for their overall development, learning, and growth. As children and teens are spending more time on digital media, <\/span><b>there is increasing concern about the impact screens have on brain function in general,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and memory specifically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this is an area that needs much more research, let\u2019s look at what the studies tell us so far:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Passive versus active use of devices and media makes a difference.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When kids are actively engaged in games and content on devices, their overall memory for things like vocabulary and facts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/feduc.2021.600687\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is higher than<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they are passively watching something on the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Higher amounts of screen time are connected to worse cognitive abilities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(including memory), less sleep, and less physical activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more time kids spend on digital devices and media, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanchi\/article\/PIIS2352-4642(18)30278-5\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the worse they tend to perform on cognitive tasks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as learning new information, remembering important things, and solving problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increased screen time alone seems to create these issues, but lost sleep and low levels of physical activity also contribute to poorer memory and thinking skills overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>3. Working memory tends to be worse in young children who spend more time on devices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more time spent on screens (in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hfjc.library.ubc.ca\/index.php\/HFJC\/article\/view\/710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that meant over 1 hour per day), the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worse the scores on working memory. This is problematic for many reasons, as a strong working memory is needed for school and life success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Pre-teens who don\u2019t get enough good quality sleep at night are at higher risk of poor brain development and cognitive problems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including memory) during the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know that excessive screen time use, especially at bedtime or during the night, causes kids to get less quality sleep than what they need. This loss of sleep from device use can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cercorcomms\/article\/3\/1\/tgab062\/6407965\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly impact their abilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the day time; especially for learning in school, regulating their behavior and mood, and engaging appropriately with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> <b>The current generation of children may be at higher risk for development of dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s disease in adulthood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to excessive screen use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this is a hypothesis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35164464\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based on current research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it does raise a red flag for long term concerns. If children continue excessive screen time use throughout childhood and into adulthood, it is possible their brains may be changed in negative ways, including severe memory issues like dementia later on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All the more reason to be thinking about healthy device use for children now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What can parents do to help?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re concerned about supporting your child\u2019s memory, and the negative impact that screen time can have, there are several practical things you can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep is incredibly important for all of us, but especially kids. To help them along the way, <strong>make sure they\u2019re getting the <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/are-your-kids-getting-enough-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">age-appropriate amount of sleep they need<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, keep devices out of the way before bedtime, so they aren\u2019t interfering with your child\u2019s sleep. Turning off devices at least an hour before bed and keeping them out of the bedroom at night are two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/how-to-reduce-screen-time-before-bed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important strategies to support sleep for kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>How can screen time be made more productive? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Focus on more interactive games and activities on devices<\/strong>, as opposed to passive viewing or scrolling.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Talk with your kids about what apps are best and why<\/strong>, and work together to set up time limits that support active, rather than passive, use of screens.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Find <a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/15-best-apps-for-kids-this-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apps that encourage your kids to learn<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> or be creative<\/strong> while having fun.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Set age-appropriate time limits for devices<\/strong> to encourage a balance of activities throughout the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best things we can do to support child brain development and function (including memory) is make sure that kids have a good blend of activities in their daily life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means some screen time combined with physical activity, chores, social time with other people in person, and time for non-screen play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As both a parent and professional I understand the challenges that come with managing screen time, which is why I highly recommend using a parental control app that allows you to easily and effectively set and enforce device limits. <\/span><b>Qustodio is the app I use and recommend<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, always in conversation with your children about how you\u2019re using it and why, in addition to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/family-digital-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evolving the plan together<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they grow and mature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you&#8217;re a parent, you want to do everything you can to support your child\u2019s brain development and memory.
