A recent Common Sense Media report showed that <\/span><b>around half of 11 to 17-year-olds get over <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/research\/constant-companion-a-week-in-the-life-of-a-young-persons-smartphone-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>200 notifications on their phone<\/b><\/a><b> each day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with some teens\u2019 phones reporting a high of 4,500. These notifications can start almost as soon as kids have access to smartphones: in the UK, a Year 6 (5th grade) school teacher reported picking up his pupil\u2019s phone only to be met with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/headteacher-explains-shocking-reason-smartphones-10222567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>9,000 unread messages<\/b><\/a><b> from the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/is-whatsapp-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>class WhatsApp group<\/b><\/a><b>, all received overnight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This need for constant connection can take its toll, as ever-present technology, social media, and always-on devices contribute to a sense of what some wellbeing professionals are calling <\/span><b>\u201cdigital anxiety\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With each buzz comes a new distraction, along with a need to check in or be in the loop: especially during the teen years, where strong social bonds and being accepted are top of mind. So what can we do to help our kids?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What is digital anxiety? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><b>The overwhelm that comes from being constantly connected and available<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through our digital devices can eventually cause us, and our children, to experience digital anxiety. As is the case with other forms of anxiety, the threshold isn\u2019t the same for everyone &#8211; we all have different levels of tolerance for how much content we can create or consume, and how much online communication we\u2019re comfortable with before we start feeling like it\u2019s just too much. <\/span><b>The feeling most often comes up on social media platforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while we\u2019re consuming news-related items or doing online research, as well as inside messaging apps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Digital anxiety\u2019s impact on wellbeing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small amounts of stress lasting for short periods of time <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be helpful if we see it as a signal that something seems \u201coff\u201d, and create meaningful change as a result. If this kind of stress remains unchecked, though, it can build and become detrimental to both our physical and emotional wellbeing, impacting our moods, relationships, and behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Digital anxiety can leave us feeling irritable or frustrated, excessively worried<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (think: doomscrolling for hours)<\/span><b>, doubting ourselves and <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/the-dangerous-link-between-likes-followers-and-your-childs-self-esteem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>our self-worth<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (think: viewing picture-perfect fashion or exploring dreamy vacation reels on Instagram), and in more severe cases, it may even <\/span><b>contribute to feelings of deep sadness and depression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>What do anxiety symptoms look like in teens and children?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/any-anxiety-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> common mental health issue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among children and teens, but it can be hard to spot because it can show up in a number of different, sometimes contradictory, ways:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLow-energy\u201d behavior such as withdrawal and avoidance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, \u201chigh-energy\u201d behavior such as frustration, preoccupation, and emotional outbursts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common physical symptoms such as stomach or head aches.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any one, or a combination, of these can also lead children to develop worries, apprehensions, and fears around things like going to school, being in public, eating certain foods, or being away from their caregivers, among others. Use your unique insight into your child\u2019s maturity and developmental needs to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/how-to-create-a-family-technology-contract\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create a set of rules together<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and reassess these periodically as your child grows and develops the skills they will need to become an increasingly responsible and independent tech user.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some key habits and practices:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be clear on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/how-to-pick-age-appropriate-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what age-appropriateness means online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and ensure your child accesses age-appropriate games and apps, along with other digital content like podcasts and streaming shows<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set clear screen use and gaming schedules, with clear on and off times (on weeknights <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weekends)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify quality screen time vs \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/what-is-brain-rot-a-parents-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain rot<\/a>,\u201d and have frequent conversations about the importance of maximizing beneficial online experiences\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove devices from bedrooms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As much as possible, avoid digital activities before school<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage your child in digital co-viewing and co-playing, where you watch or play along with them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure that if your child engages in solitary device use (e.g. alone in their bedroom) you have insight into what they are doing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish an ongoing conversation with your child about technology: talk to them about what they like and dislike about it, how it helps and hinders their wellbeing, relationships, and learning goals, and what we can all do to improve our digital wellbeing and online safety &#8211; parents included!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Does social media cause anxiety? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Events in both the online and offline worlds can cause us to experience anxiety, and certain online experiences can either worsen children\u2019s existing anxiety-related symptoms or cause these to develop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media platforms, in particular, are one big area of concern for a number of reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bullying is made easier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the lack of immediate in-person recourse and the ability to remain anonymous. Other negative behaviors such as ignoring friends and classmates or gossiping about them is also made easier in virtual spaces.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Social comparison<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a phenomenon that is healthy in measured amounts, skyrockets on platforms like Instagram, TikTok Tok and YouTube, causing a sense of being \u2018lesser-than\u2019. For young girls in particular, the exposure to <\/span><b>highly filtered and staged<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (read: unrealistic) body, beauty and lifestyle images can be highly detrimental to their self-esteem, body image, and mood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The proliferation of mis- and disinformation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be hard to navigate, made harder by generative AI, and can erode the sense of trust and confidence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Information overload<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and constant connectivity can cause feelings of overwhelm and frustration. Social platforms are built to maximise engagement and the consumption or creation of content, through what is known as \u201cpersuasive design\u201d (for example, the infinite scroll, the auto-play function, or \u2018Recommended\u2019 content).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The content on these platforms is user-generated<\/b><span> and while there is some level of moderation, harmful content (and bad actors who create it) is still present and can find its way to our children. In worst-case scenarios, some children may be exposed to key online safety risks like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/when-and-how-to-talk-to-your-child-about-online-predators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>grooming<\/span><\/a><span>, pornography, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/talking-to-your-child-about-tiktok-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>dangerous challenges<\/span><\/a><span>, sextortion, and content that is harmful to their mental and physical health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>When should teens seek help? <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescence is always a time of great change, but for some children it unfolds more smoothly than for others. If difficult or troubling feelings like sadness, overwhelm, and worry persist and you notice other problematic behavioral patterns such as withdrawal, a lack or excess of sleep, or changes in weight, first <\/span><b>speak to your child about what you\u2019ve noticed and find out what <\/b><b><i>their <\/i><\/b><b>idea of getting help or \u2018feeling better\u2019 looks like <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(especially if you have a teen).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do have an older child, it\u2019s highly likely that they\u2019ve already explored resources online or have sought help from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pre.qustodio.com\/en\/blog\/self-diagnosing-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content creators on social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or mental health and wellbeing apps. Find out, without being judgmental, if they have and whether any of these resources proved to be helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If what you and your child have tried so far hasn\u2019t helped, you may want to consult with your pediatrician or primary care physician and then if needed, a licensed mental health professional such as psychiatrist, psychologist, family therapist, or a counselor. Keep in mind an important difference between today\u2019s generations of younger Gen Zers and Alphas as compared to their Millennial and Gen X parents: <\/span><b>young people today tend to feel more comfortable communicating via digital platforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so your child might need some additional support if they\u2019ll be seeing a licensed mental health professional face-to-face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">This content is designed for educational and informational purposes.
